Samshield Helmet Size Guide: Find Your Perfect Fit
Samshield Helmet Size Guide
Learn how to measure your head, choose the correct Samshield shell and liner size, and check that your riding helmet fits securely and comfortably.
Finding Your Correct Samshield Helmet Size
Samshield helmets use a removable liner system to create a precise and comfortable fit. Your head measurement determines your starting liner size, while the corresponding outer shell size depends on the helmet model you choose.
Espayo Equestrian stocks Samshield 2.0, Miss Shield 2.0, XC, XJ and Miss XJ riding helmets. Use the model guides below to find the most suitable starting size.
How to Measure Your Head for a Samshield Helmet
Use a soft measuring tape and take your measurement in centimetres. Measure two or three times to ensure the result is consistent.
Use a soft tape
Use a flexible fabric measuring tape. Avoid using a rigid or metal tape measure.
Position it correctly
Place the tape approximately 1–2cm above your eyebrows and just above the tops of your ears.
Measure the widest point
Guide the tape around the widest part at the back of your head, keeping it level all the way around.
Check the tension
The tape should feel firm but should not dig into your head. Record your measurement in centimetres.

Samshield 2.0 and Miss Shield 2.0 Size Guide
Samshield 2.0 helmets use an interchangeable V2 liner. Your head circumference usually corresponds with the liner size shown in centimetres.
Samshield 2.0 shell and liner sizes
| Shell size | Compatible liner sizes | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 52, 53, 54, 55 Small and 56 Small | Smaller head circumferences and a more compact outer shell. |
| Medium | 55 Medium, 56, 57 and 58 Medium | Mid-range sizes, including some crossover measurements. |
| Large | 57 Large, 58, 59, 60 and 61 | Larger head circumferences and riders requiring more shell depth. |
| Extra Large | 61 Extra Large, 62, 63 and 64 | The largest Samshield 2.0 fitting range. |
Samshield 2.0 liner options
Different V2 liners can help refine the fit according to your head shape and ventilation preference.
- Shadowmatt V2 liner: A supportive option designed to create a close, secure feel around the head.
- Premium V2 liner: Designed with a more open forehead area to promote airflow and breathability.
- Round V2 liner: Intended for riders with a rounder head shape who experience pressure at the sides in a standard liner.
Does the same size guide apply to Miss Shield 2.0?
Yes. The standard Samshield 2.0 and Miss Shield 2.0 use the same shell-and-liner sizing principle. The key difference is the wider Miss Shield peak rather than the internal helmet sizing.
Your helmet should sit approximately one to two finger widths above your eyebrows, remain level from front to back and feel evenly secure around your head.
Samshield XC, XJ and Miss XJ Size Guide
Samshield XC and XJ helmets use their own compatible removable liner system. XC/XJ liners are not interchangeable with Samshield 2.0 V2 liners, so it is important to select the liner made specifically for your helmet model.
Samshield XC and XJ shell and liner sizes
| Shell size | Compatible liner sizes | Fitting notes |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | 53, 54, 55, 56, 57 and 58 | Covers most smaller and medium head circumferences within the XC/XJ range. |
| Large | 57, 58, 59, 60 and 61 | Suitable for larger measurements or where greater shell depth is required. |
XC and XJ liner options
- Closed liner: Provides increased contact and stability around the forehead. This is generally the standard option.
- Open liner: Offers a more open forehead area for riders who prefer increased ventilation.
XC, XJ and Miss XJ fitting
The fitting method is the same across the XC, XJ and Miss XJ ranges. The helmet should sit level, feel evenly snug and remain stable when you gently move your head.
The Miss XJ has a wider peak, but this does not alter the internal liner measurement.
How Should a Samshield Helmet Fit?
A correctly fitted Samshield should feel close and secure without causing pain or concentrated pressure.
Signs of a correct fit
- The helmet sits level from front to back.
- The front sits around one to two fingers above the eyebrows.
- Pressure feels even around the entire head.
- The helmet gently moves the skin on your forehead.
- It remains stable when you move or lower your head.
- The chin strap feels secure without being restrictive.
Signs the fit needs adjusting
- The helmet rotates or slips independently of your head.
- It falls forwards towards your eyebrows.
- There are visible gaps around the sides or back.
- It sits unusually high on your head.
- You experience sharp pressure, pain or a headache.
- You must overtighten the chin strap to keep it stable.
What If I Am Between Two Sizes?
Your head measurement is a starting point rather than the only factor in selecting a riding helmet. Head shape, hairstyle, shell depth and personal comfort all affect the final fit.
When your measurement falls between two liner sizes, try the helmet indoors for approximately 10 to 15 minutes while keeping all labels and packaging intact.
- Choose the smaller liner if the larger option allows the helmet to move or rotate.
- Choose the larger liner if the smaller option creates painful or concentrated pressure.
- If you fall between two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger liner size as your starting point. If the helmet feels too loose once tried on, we can exchange the liner for a smaller size. We also offer follow-up fitting support to help you achieve the best possible fit. Appointments can be arranged in person at our office, virtually, or at any of the trade events we attend.
- Do not rely on the chin strap to correct an otherwise loose helmet.
Samshield memory foam liners can settle slightly with wear, but a helmet should never feel painfully tight when it is first fitted.
When Should I Replace My Samshield Liner?
Samshield liners are removable and washable, helping you maintain a fresh and comfortable fit. However, the memory foam can gradually compress through regular use.
Consider replacing your liner when:
- Your helmet feels noticeably looser than when it was first fitted.
- The liner has lost its original shape or support.
- The material is damaged, torn or heavily worn.
- Your hairstyle or preferred fit has changed.
- You would like a spare liner to rotate between washes.
Always check that the replacement liner is compatible with your exact helmet model before ordering.
